The basic pattern worked in stockinette with DPNs size 7/US 10.5 is a fast knit - so you can make a pair for the entire family. Even the thumb is easier than you might think: just "park" a few relevant stitches on an extra safety needle. Once the mitten is done, put the stitches back on the working needle and knit the thumb. Instructions include sizes 8 and 9/US M and L.
