What is the difference between felting wool and other wool?

Felting wool is also called raw wool. The natural animal hair of felting wool has not yet been processed into a common yarn wool. So, in principle, it is the preliminary stage of the well-known knitting wool. Felting only works really well when the felting wool is made of natural animal hair. This is obtained, for example, from sheep, goats or alpacas. However, some pet owners also use hair for felting that they obtain from combing their dogs and cats.

How does felting work? When felting, you can implement a lot of different projects. Especially in the field of decoration, this is very popular. The finished projects are usually washed, so that the hairs of the felting wool connect with each other and the robust material from felting is created. There is dry and wet felting. For each project you can buy the right felting wool at proud2craft and become a real felting professional after a short time.

Buy felting wool: different felting wool in comparison

All felting wool is equally suitable for felting, but will produce different end results. If you want to buy felting wool for your next project, then you should know the main differences of felting wool. That's what we're here for!

1) Raw Wool: Raw wool is the felting wool that can be obtained directly after combing an animal. The wool is sheared, cleaned and hand plucked before you can process it. Due to the fact that the raw wool comes directly from an animal, it varies greatly in texture, as the fur of an animal is not uniform. Therefore, when you use the raw wool for felting, you will get more of a coarse look where one side is very matted and the other side is more loose.

2) Worsted wool: This type of felting wool consists only of the smooth and longer hairs of the raw wool. The worsted wool is therefore very soft and, depending on the species, relatively fine. Merino wool is often used here.

3) Fleece wool: Especially for three-dimensional felting the fleece wool is well suited, because it can be felted very easily and strongly. Unlike the worsted wool, the fleece wool consists of short and curly hairs.

4) Fairy wool: This colloquial term is used to describe dyed sheep wool. In processing, the fairy wool is heated and is thus already partly felted. Especially for dry felting and needle felting, the fairy wool is often used.

Especially in the beginning, it happens to many when felting that the projects become a little loose and do not last quite so long. After a while, though, you'll get the hang of it and you'll see how versatile felting can be. As a beginner, felting balls is a good way to get a feel for the process. Figurines and other decorative items can follow later. At proud2craft you can buy your felting wool and get started right away. Have fun!
